Can Mobile Phones Really Have An Effect On Your Health

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Tosif_Patel]Tosif Patel While it has been rumoured for many years, a recently announced report has shown that excessive use of Mobile Phones can effect your health, and the ability to have children. A Study by the Reproductive Research Centre at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio suggests that Mobile Phone use can have a direct effect on the male sperm count, and ability to reproduce. Probably one of the most damming reports to have been produced into Mobile Phone use, and the potential side effects. The Study was carried out in Mumbai, India specifically because the Mobile Phone craze has yet to effect all areas of society in the country. Of the 364 men studied, it was shown that those who used Mobile Phones at least four hours a day were most effected by the microwaves emitted from the devices. It was shown to reduce the number of sperm produced by the body, as well as reducing the quality and mobility of the sperm by almost half. A truly shocking statistic, bearing in mind the popularity of Mobile Phones throughout the world. The detailed analysis highlighted a reduction in sperm count from 86 million per millilitre, down to some 50 million per millilitre in heavy Mobile users. Clinical tests also showed a direct relationship between Mobile Phone use and the overall health of the sperm. This report is just the latest in a long list of clinical trials attempting to find a correlation between various health issues, and excessive Mobile Phone use. The overall picture is very mixed, with various studies showing different results :- January 2006 A team of researchers from Leeds University studied the effect of Mobile Phones on the brain, with particular emphasis on the relationship between microwaves and brain tumours / brain cancer. The study involved 966 diagnosed with Glimoa (the most common form of brain tumour) and 1,716 without the condition, in five different areas of the UK. The participants were asked to detail their Mobile Phone patterns for the previous 10 years and the results compared against their particular health backgrounds. In summary the study found that there was no direct link between Mobile Phone use and the development of brain tumours. Surprisingly they did find that there appeared, on the surface, to be indications that people who developed brain tumours seemed to develop them on the side of the head where they used their Mobile Phones. However, the connection was the quashed with scientists explaining biased reporting by various parts of the media to back up claims of health issues. April 2006 A similar study carried out in Sweden produced results directly in contradiction of the earlier UK report. Researchers at the Swedish national Institute for Working Life studied a group of 2,200 Mobile Phone users, and identified an alarming link between Mobile Phone use and brain tumours. The study found that there was a 240% increased risk of developing brain tumours, depending upon the level of use. The researchers also believe that there is a link between early use of Mobile Phones and the increased risk of serious illness. So what is the real story? The problem with the many research results released is that the parties all seem to have some degree of bias, whether they are trying to prove there are links, or trying to prove that Mobile Phones are not harmful. There is also the issue of biased reporting in the media, with many publications trying to cast doubt on one anothers reports and conclusions. After stripping away the many biases which are obvious in many of these studies, it seems likely that excessive Mobile Phone use may have an effect on your health. Whether the microwaves emitted from todays Mobile Phones can actually have a serious effect is still uncertain, but it pays to be aware of the potential risks. Recent developments in Mobile Phones should help in the future, with many handset manufacturers now working on increasing various protections for the user. In the ever evolving world of Mobile Technology the requirement for ever stronger power supplies has highlighted the necessity for increased protection, although to be fair, it does appear that the Mobile Phone manufacturers are responding. Write This Way

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

By Yvonne Chase Q: Ive been on the Internet for about six months and Im not getting any messages from anyone. Im a very attractive woman who has a lot to offer. I put lots of info in my profile but no one is asking me out. Can you tell me how to write a profile that gets results? A: My sister thinks Im strange but I happen to like Internet dating. Quite a few men have hopped on a plane to meet me. Ive met nice people on the net and had great dates and Ive met a few nuts on the net that I never want to see again; no different than Ive met face to face. One guy came to meet me for our first date looking like he got dressed with his eyes glued shutI never want to see him again while another guy and I went out, had a great time and are still friends to this day. If you have the skill of discernment, you will do fine on the Internet. At the end of the day, the Internet is another way of meeting people and exposing yourself to the masses. You can meet and greet more people on the Internet in one hour than you can in one week. The key to Internet dating success is writing a profile that piques the readers interest. Its not what you say in your profile but how you say it. If you follow my top 3 tips below, you will be on your way to lots of dates in a very short period of time. Good luck! 1. Post a photo. And not one with you in a group of people or one with your ex-boyfriends head cut out of the photo. Not cute! Group photos are a no-no because you dont want the viewer wondering which one of you is the one. Your photo should show you in your best light. Profiles with photos get viewed 10x more than those without. 2. Put YOU in your profile. Ok, what does that mean? What it means is this put language in your profile that allows your personality to shine through and gives the viewer a strong sense of who you are. Talk about what you like (entertaining at home, a variety of music and name a few artists you enjoy, people watching, interior decorating etc.), what you like to do (karaoke, checking out new restaurants, going to the movies, bike riding, hiking etc.), places you like to go (the beach, live concerts, comedy clubs etc.), mention the last movie you saw or the last book youve read. Get the point? 3. Be honest. Your photo should be current. It should look like you today not how you wished you looked or the way you looked 5 years ago when you were on that amazing diet that melted away 20 excess pounds. Be honest about your height, weight, hair etc. This cuts out the chances of any surprises when you meet face-to-face. Below is an example of a profile using the tips mentioned above: If you are looking for a professional woman with a passion for life, a strong spiritual side and a real sense of adventure who lives out loud and likes to have fun, look no further! I work hard in my professional life and I play equally as hard in my personal life. On any given weekend, youll find me bike riding, walking, hiking in the mountains or doing some other physical activity. I also enjoy hanging at the bookstore, going to the movies, listening to live music, doing karaoke, laughing until my side hurts at a comedy club or dining out at a restaurant. When the basketball playoffs are on, I’m glued to the TV at home or at a sports bar. Im not always on the runI enjoy cooking and nothing makes me happier than preparing [your favorite dish] and opening a bottle of [name your favorite wine] for a relaxing evening at home. I slow it all down to a screeching halt on Sunday and make time for church. A transplanted New Yorker originally from the beautiful island of Nassau Bahamas Ive been living in southern California for 16 months and love it. Life is sweet! After writing your ad, you should be able to read it aloud and say, “Wow, I cant wait to meet this person!” If you can wait to meet this person, chances are everyone else can wait too. Time to rewrite. Your Rose Garden Planting

Monday, October 29th, 2007

By Robert Roy Sometime during the year you will probably plant roses in your rose garden. There are many opinions on how to do this but I will tell you what has worked for me. First let me distinguish planting rose into the rose garden that are dormant plants compared with those grown in pots or containers. Roses which are dormant and bare roots grow well but usually don’t bloom as long as those in the containers or pots. The latter are usually growing and not dormant. If you are buying dormant plants make sure that you are getting #1 grade. These will give you a much better crop during the summer to your rose garden. Preparing The Soil Pick an area that will get at least 5-6 hours of sunlight a day. Sun is a very important part of the growth cycle of your rose garden. The soil should be a good loam and can be mixed with some clay. The loam should be down to a depth of at least 12-15 inches. Dig the soil out for the plant so that it will fit the plant with no damage to the roots and that the first bud spike will set about an inch below the surface. I would also suggest that at the bottom of the hole you use a fork to loosen the dirt. Now The Planting Before setting the plant into the hole in the rose garden, I suggest that you mix some farm manure into the loosened dirt at the bottom. Trim any damaged roots and then set it into the hole. Now that the rose is set into the hole be sure that the loam you put put around the plant is loose as well. Fill the hole to about 2/3 - 3/4 and tap it down. Water the plant and the dirt. Let the water settle then add the rest of the loam. Be sure that the first bud spike is at least one inch below the surface. For dormant plants mound the soil over the plant so it will not dry out. For plants that were in pots or containers there is no need to mound the soil in the rose garden. It is fine to have a few inches of mulch around the plant base as this contains the moisture. Watering Roses should be watered about every 7 - 10 days and you need to water the base of the plant. If you water the flower it is easier for the plant to have disease infect it. Although this presents as a diversion from orchids it is definitely in line with our additional items we have added. Planting Season Planting can take place between mid October and mid May. You should not plant or transplant after mid May until October. Good growing in your rose garden. Did you enjoy this article? If you did sign up for more in our monthly newsletter. Dating Ideas - The All Day Date

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

By Robert Crowell Surprise the love of your life with an all-day date! This is for those really special times in your life like a significant anniversary, a special birthday, or just to let her know how much you love her. This date takes a bit more planning than most, but will be a day that she remembers for the rest of her life. Have a theme and oddly enough, leave early in the morning on the day of the date. Plan on being back around 5:00. Leave your first note where she will find it. This note should say something like, This is going to be a very special day. I want you to start by taking a nice long warm shower. Relax and enjoy yourself.” Leave the next note near the shower, telling her to open it after her bath. It could say something like, Go to the laundry room and find your first gift of the day!” After her nice long shower, she will go and find the first gift, maybe a stuffed animal. Underneath it or between the paws there should be the next card that tells her to, Go to the mall and spend the $50 on something you have been wanting to get yourself! Be back by 1:00. Your next clue could say, Just relax and read a book or watch a movie. As the next surprise, have flowers delivered at 2:00. Have two cards. One should say, Open Now and should tell her how much you love her and that you hope she is enjoying her day. The second should say, Open at 4:00. This will continue to build the suspense. So, it’s 4:00 and she’s ready for her next clue. Tell her to get dressed for an evening at a nice restaurant and give her enough information to know what to wear. You can ruin the whole day by not providing enough information so that she knows how to prepare. Come home about 5:00 and see how she is coming along. If she has enjoyed the day, which she should have by now, she should be telling you how much fun she is having and how she can’t wait to see what is coming next. Have a limousine come and pick you up to take you to the restaurant. This will really surprise her and it will make all of her friends jealous. If the restaurant takes reservations, make them in advance. If you know the restaurant well, visit them ahead of time. Drop off a single rose in a small vase during the day and ask the matre d’ to present it to her when she comes in the door with you. Your date will continue to be surprised in a very nice way as the evening goes on. Next, take your girl to the nicest hotel in town, again delivered by limo! This hotel part is where the extra planning needs to take place. The next part is something that few guys will ever do and something that she will remember forever! Pack a small suitcase or duffel bag and deliver it to the hotel a day or two in advance with casual clothes and toiletries. No woman wants to go home the next morning wearing the dress-up clothes that she wore the night before! She will be much more relaxed and relaxation leads to good romantic feelings! Arrange for breakfast in bed and have the limo pick you up and drive you home! The daylong date takes some work, but is really a lot of fun. It includes the day-long anticipation of things to come, notes, secrets, and surprises lasting all the way up until the following morning! It doesn’t get much better than that. This is the date that she will always remember, and so will you! Robert Crowell specializes in presenting information on dating ideas, gift-giving and romancing the girl of your dreams. Life’s Too Short for Celery Sticks & Dieting

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

By Alan Wayler Clearing the Path for Successful Weight Management Dieters striving for success in their efforts to manage their weight may have more than just unwanted pounds to lose. First, they have to shed some common myths about dieting. Myths about dieting instil false hopes in people striving to manage their weight, misleading them to formulate lofty expectations that only serve to frustrate their efforts and stunt their progress. Indeed, there is little evidence - if any at all - to support three common myths about dieting, as reviewed in a recent edition of Healthy Weight Journal. Demystifying the myths about dieting and learning the trust about the effects of calorie restriction are important steps in beginning to give up dieting and start eating normally as part of a healthy lifestyle that supports success at weight management. Myth #1: Dieting makes you thin Most people who lose weight by dieting eventually regain the pounds, and most gain back even more than they lost. A review by the National Institutes of health of all published studies on the efficacy of weight loss treatments indicates that people, regardless of their weight, lost an average of only 10 pounds over many weeks and months of dieting (and for many of these people, 10 pounds was a trivial amount of weight). Further, most of the weight lost was regained within one year, and almost all of the weight, for all of the people, was regained within five years. What’s the reason for the lack of success? The authors of the article speculate that one reason may be the body’s natural reaction against weight loss. That’s not to say that we can’t optimize our natural tendencies in the weight arena, but the fact remains that genes predispose some people to obesity, particularly when they are in an environment that promotes overfeeding. And that leads us to the second reason for the lack of success most people see with dieting. The inability to lose significant amounts of weight, or maintain weight loss, through dieting likely has a lot to do with the overeating that occurs when people go off the diet. You’ve heard it here before: If dieters think they’ve eaten foods they shouldn’t (which usually means beloved, high-calorie foods), they usually abandon their diets and splurge on large quantities of “forbidden” foods. Myth #2: Dieters eat less than non-dieters Not so. Studies show that restrained eaters (or dieters) often consume more snacks and eat more frequently than unrestrained eaters (normal eaters). Overeating and increased hunger occur after periods of physical and psychological deprivation induced by periods of food restriction. The consequence? Very often, it’s a binge. Myth #3: Dieting makes you happier Wrong again. Instead, the outcome of dieting seems to be the opposite - feelings of depression, anxiety and frustration. The fluid loss and empty stomach in the early stages of dieting are, in effect, come-ons. They offer encouragement to the dieter, but within a short period of time, the “baggage” attached to dieting begins to produce negative effects. The dieter can’t eat when, where or what she wants. Socializing becomes unappealing if the dieter is determined to stick with her diet. Some dieters become irritable and energy-depleted due to hunger. And obsession with food and eating begin to cloud the dieter’s ability to think about other things. It’s not hard to see why Americans are struggling with an obesity epidemic, given that for several decades, most of the American population seemed to be permanently “on a diet.” Fortunately, more and more of us - and the health professionals who work with us - are getting the message that diets don’t work. As we have long promoted at Green Mountain, if we change our focus to health, we will take care of our weight. As important is the fact that achieving and maintain a state of health can be an enjoyable process. The keys are normal eating that includes the foods you love in amounts that leave you satisfied without feeling stuffed, regular physical activity that you enjoy, effective stress management, and feeling good about ourselves and our bodies, no matter what our weight. It helps to remember, as one speaker noted at a recent conference we attended, “Life is too short for self-hate and celery sticks!” 2006 Green Mountain at Fox Run, Ludlow, Vermont. Alan H. Easy Diet Plan-Complete Guide

Friday, October 26th, 2007

By Terri Bennett A successful weight loss diet is one that corresponds to your favorite foods and lifestyle, and one that’s sustainable over a long period. When choosing a plan its important that the diet plan fits your lifestyle, one that allows you to lose weight and still enjoy food otherwise it is not sustainable. The best diets are diets that feel easy- not diets where you feel youre deprived of nice food. Firstly; eat your favourite foods but just size down on your portions. You need a balance so eat foods that you enjoy but in moderation. Take time eating your meals, I know this sounds silly but chewing your properly will give your body time to acknowledge the food your eating. If you eat really fast, your not giving your body time to realize when your full. So if you eat slower, you will eat less food, less food will satisfy your hunger. Also, it is a lot better for your digestive system, which will then have a knock-on affect throughout your body. Plan your meals; do not let life determine your diet. If you do you may eat the wrong foods through convenience. Planning your meals will help you sustain progressive weight loss all the way through your diet plan. Try different methods of cooking, for example baking, steaming, boiling as opposed to frying. Rule out any bad oil wherever possible. Instead get you oil intake from fish and olive oil.Eat fruit-fruit is a carbohydrate, a usable carbohydrate which will give energy and will banish any sugar cravings you may get. Eat vegetables- this sounds obvious but many people dont get enough vegetables, to make life easy to prepare vegetables and keep them in fridge for when you feel like a snack or take them to work and just nibble on them all day. Drink as much water as you can, no more fizzy drinks and supposedly healthy fruit juices, a lot of them also contain a lot of sugar! Last but definitely not least, in fact, most importantly- eat breakfast, this will kick start your metabolic rate for the rest of the day, people who eat breakfast maintain a healthy weight. So this diet plan guide really is that easy! Most importantly though, it is doable and it will adapt into anybodys busy lifestyle. If you want to lose weight and control your weight, apply this plan to your life! Top 10 Signs of An Abusive Man

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

By Stephany Alexander Abusive men are often survivors of abuse themselves. Signs of an abusive man can range from emotional, verbal, physical, or sexual abuse. Frequently an emotionally abusive man is also a verbally abusive man or a combination of all abuse types. A sign of an abusive man can usually be found after a few dates if you pay attention, ask a lot of questions and do some investigating into his past. Abusive relationships are characterized by control games, violence, jealousy and withholding sex and emotional contact. An emotionally abusive man is harder to pin-point and a skilled, abusive man can easily make you think you arent good enough or that everything is your fault. It is just as difficult to recover from emotional abuse as it is from physical abuse. Emotional abuse causes low self-esteem and depression. An abusive man may tell you he loves you or that he will change, so you wont leave. However, the more times you take him back, the more control he will gain. Empty promises become the norm. Make sure you pay attention to his actions and not merely his words. As the old saying goes, actions speak louder than words. Abusive relationships are never abusive in the beginning. If they were, women would dump the abusive men immediately in search of a good man. According to the American Psychological Association Force on Violence and Family, over 4 million American women experience a serious assault by a partner each year! Who can forget when heavy-weight champ Mike Tyson was convicted of raping Desiree Washington and sentenced to six years in prison. Tyson served three years before being released on parole. Thereafter, he married Robin Givens but they divorced on Valentines Day only a year later because Givens claimed Tyson abused her. Abusive behavior touches all ranges of society. We have broken down the top 10 signs of an abusive man. If your partner exhibits one or more of these signs, it may be time to reevaluate your relationship and seek help or get out. 1. Jealousy & Possessiveness Becomes jealous over your family, friends, co-workers. Tries to isolate you. Views his woman and children as his property instead of as unique individuals. Accuses you of cheating or flirting with other men without cause. Always asks where youve been and with whom in an accusatory manner. 2. Control He is overly demanding of your time and must be the center of your attention. He controls finances, the car, and the activities you partake in. Becomes angry if woman begins showing signs of independence or strength. 3. Superiority He is always right, has to win or be in charge. He always justifies his actions so he can be right by blaming you or others. A verbally abusive man will talk down to you or call you names in order to make himself feel better. The goal of an abusive man is to make you feel weak so they can feel powerful. Abusers are frequently insecure and this power makes them feel better about themselves. 4. Manipulates Tells you youre crazy or stupid so the blame is turned on you. Tries to make you think that its your fault he is abusive. Says he cant help being abusive so you feel sorry for him and you keep trying to help him. Tells others you are unstable. 5. Mood Swings His mood switches from aggressive and abusive to apologetic and loving after the abuse has occurred. 6. Actions dont match words He breaks promises, says he loves you and then abuses you. 7. Punishes you An emotionally abusive man may withhold sex, emotional intimacy, or plays the silent game as punishment when he doesnt get his way. He verbally abuses you by frequently criticizing you. 8. Unwilling to seek help An abusive man doesnt think there is anything wrong with him so why should he seek help? Does not acknowledge his faults or blames it on his childhood or outside circumstances. 9. Disrespects women Shows no respect towards his mother, sisters, or any women in his life. Thinks women are stupid and worthless. 10. Has a history of abusing women and/or animals or was abused himself Batterers repeat their patterns and seek out women who are submissive and can be controlled. Abusive behavior can be a generational dysfunction and abused men have a great chance of becoming abusers. Men who abuse animals are much more likely to abuse women also. If you continue to stay in an abusive relationship because you think he will change and start treating you well, think again. An abusive man does not change without long-term therapy. Group counseling sessions are particularly helpful in helping abusive men recognize their abusive patterns. Type A personality types seem to be more prone to abusive behavior due to their aggressive nature. Drugs and alcohol can create or further escalate an abusive relationship. Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous are excellent programs for an addict. The abusers partner should also seek help for their codependent behavior at Codependents Anonymous. If the abusive man is not willing to seek help, then you must take action by protecting yourself and any children involved by leaving. By staying in an abusive relationship you are condoning it. If you are scared you wont be able to survive because of finances, pick up the phone book and start calling shelters. Try calling family, friends and associates and ask them if they can help or know of ways to help. Once you leave, the abuser may cry and beg for forgiveness but dont go back until you have spoken to his counselor and he has completed long-term therapy successfully. Be prepared for the abuse to increase after you leave because the abuser has lost control. The Bureau of Justice Statistics states that on the average, more than three women are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends every day so please be careful. If you partner is not willing to seek help for his abusive behavior, your only option is to leave. Body Mass Index Chart Misleading

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

By Jim O’Connor Remember when the body mass index chart first came out? People were running to calculators trying to find out if they are considered overweight and unhealthy. Many, especially athletes, were quickly shocked to find out they were labeled obese. I’m even talking about lean professional athletes who were the picture perfect image of strength, power, and health. After calculating their body mass index (BMI), many were shocked to find out their calculated number indicated a detriment to their health. So how do you calculate this number anyway? First off, you can be lazy and go to consumer.gov/weightloss/bmi.htm, and have the computer tell you the answer. However, if you want to calculate it yourself simply multiply your weight in pounds by 703 then divide the square of your height in inches. It is that simple. Now after using a body mass index calculator you get your bignumber. What does it mean? In most cases, not a heck of a lot. First of all, your BMI doesn’t distinguish muscle from fat. You could have a body fat percentage of 8%, with a lot of added muscle, and the body mass index chart will say you are obese, and could be at risk for significant health issues. Now let’s take the opposite. Suppose you have never exercised a day in your life and your body fat is 30%, but you weight less than the fit person with an 8% level of body fat. The BMI chart might suggest your weight is right where it should be, and you are at very little risk for health challenges. This is where the BMI Chart is misleading. Recent studies have even shown a weak and inconsistent correlation between a high BMI and disease or early mortality. How then can we get an accurate assessment of our link betweenweight, and disease? My recommendations are to incorporate a multiple assessment such as the following: 1. Body fat percentage should be calculated and considered. 2. Take measurements of you waist, hips, and height. Calculate your waist-to-hip ratio, divide the waist measurementby the hip measurement. Men should be under 0.9, and womenshould be under 0.8. A good guideline for men is to keep their waists well under 40 inches, and women under 35 inches. Your waist should be one half your height. Now these are roughestimates since many factors go into determining your risk level. For instance, how much exercise do you get? What type of foods do you consume? However, If your numbers are not in the zone mentioned above, it is time to take action and start exercising and cutting back on calories. Always consider your body fat percentage versus your leanmuscle tissue. Keep the body fat as low as possible, preferably under 30% for both men and women. Don’t rely on the body mass index charts to dictate yourchance for disease. Use the multiple approach I have outlined above. It is an intelligent approach for aiding your health and well-being. *** Attention: Ezine Editors / Website Owners ***Feel free to reprint this article in its entirety in your ezine, Blog, Autoresponder, or on your website as long as the links, and resource box are not altered in any way. By Fiona Maclean Do you believe in Love at First Sight? Well I do, and whats more scientists seem to back me up. They now believe that the initial phase of falling in love is due to a whole cocktail of chemicals that are released into the brain so that, biochemically speaking, passionate love is similar to substance abuse. And strangely enough, chocolate also causes the brain to release chemicals, in this case b-endorphin, a naturally occurring chemical similar to opium. So, you really can be addicted to love and addicted to chocolate! Sex and physical attraction to a new partner stimulate the release of hormones designed to keep us together for long enough to reproduce successfully! We are attracted to people who are like us or like our parents in some way (genetics and smell/pheromones both come into play here) and who have characteristics that make us believe they are likely to be a good partner in terms of producing children. Initial desire or lust is brought on by surges of sex hormones including estrogen and testosterone. These produce a relatively indiscriminate desire for physical gratification. When you fall in love, increases in secretion of PEA or b-Phenylethylamine, creates natural high and helps mask any failings of your potential mate. This can last for the first two to four years of the relationship. Gradually over this period, the levels of PEA return to normal. Hopefully by this stage, you will have got to know your partner and to love him or her despite their faults. And, so long as you keep having a physical relationship (even just cuddling) there are hormones which increase and help to create a bond between you. And the good news is that both sex and chocolate are good for you! There are all sorts of figures about how many calories you can burn up during sex. And of course, they are all pretty meaningless because it depends on your level of activity. But, that apart, the act of sex causes yet more chemicals to be released into your body including increases in levels of oxytocin, serotonin, vasopressin and endogenous opioids (which has a similar effect to heroin!). Sex helps increase the blood flow to your brain and to all other organs of your body. Lowering your cholesterol is another benefit of sex as a form of exercise. Sex helps lower the overall cholesterol level. It helps to tips the HDL/LDL (good/bad) cholesterol balance towards the healthier HDL side. And, as oxytocin, one of a the cocktail of hormones released by sex, is secreted in your body it releases endorphins. These natural opiates mean that sex can act as a powerful pain killer. Similarly, Chocolate is also believed to be good for you at least the dark sort with over 70% cocoa solids. Chocolate carries high levels of chemicals called phenolics,. These antioxidant phenolics prevent cholesterol from oxidizing and clogging the blood vessels. And, more research recently carried out at Kings College, London, suggests that these antioxidants also help decrease stress levels and protect against disease. In addition to its beneficial effect on blood cholesterol levels, recent research has shown that cocoa contains a wealth of phytochemicals and polyphenols, which have significant antioxidant properties and may help to reduce the risk of developing cancer. So, now, when you are worried about your addiction to love…or to chocolate…just relax in the knowledge that you are doing yourself good! Naturopathy

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

By Craig Burton Today we examine a highly influential part of my health approach - naturopathy. What is Naturopathy? Naturopathy, also known as natural medicine, or natural therapeutics, is the western version of other holistic, nature-based medical systems that harness the body’s own natural healing process (like Chinese medicine). Naturopaths believe the healing power of the body is the most powerful tool and should be supported - not overridden. The body can heal cuts, mend broken bones, rid itself of infections and achieve feats when given a chance that makes no competition against any man-made drug. History and theory The roots of naturopathy go back to the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates, who is often quoted as saying, “one man’s food is another man’s poison”, which is the basis of Metabolic Typing MT (see archive for more on MT). Hippocrates believed the foundations of health and vitality were supportive eating, adequate rest and exercise - and that cures should stimulate the body’s natural healing ability. Modern naturopathy evolved from Austrian friar Father Kneipp and German Vincent Preissnitz in the 19th century. They further developed Hippocrates idea and formulated the two concepts central to modern naturopathy: 1. Nature cure - the body has the power to heal itself. 2. Natural hygiene - the body requires clean air and water, regular exercise and fresh food, in order to be healthy. Naturopaths believe the body has a natural state of equilibrium, known as “homeostasis”, and a “vital force” that facilitates healing. They also believe poor diet, lack of exercise, inadequate fresh air and sunlight, too much stress or too many negative thoughts can disturb this equilibrium and lead to disease. Another considered cause of disease is the accumulation of toxins in the body caused by poor elimination of waste products, ingesting chemicals or additives, or the inhaling pollutants. These toxins can weaken the immune system and suppress the body’s vital force. Here the role of the naturopath is to use techniques to assist in the body’s process of elimination. Naturopath’s tool bag Naturopaths use various techniques and therapies to promote health and healing including: Advising on healthy foods options Herbal and homeopathic remedies Detoxification regimes (including fasting, enemas and colonic irrigation) to help eliminate toxins from the body and strengthen the immune system Hydrotherapy (using hot and cold baths, mineral spas and douches) Breathing exercises and stretches are used to improve flexibility and promote relaxation Osteopathic manipulation is used to correct structural misalignment Massage is used to improve circulation and relax the body and mind Consulting a practitioner Naturopaths are widespread in the US, Germany and Australia. There are fewer naturopaths in the UK and other European countries, but their numbers are steadily rising. At the first consultation, a naturopath will take your medical history and may check blood pressure and lung function, or suggest blood or other medical tests. They may also use less orthodox testing such as iridology (iris diagnosis) and radionic testing. You’ll generally be given dietary and exercise recommendations and may be asked to follow a cleansing diet or a short fast. To find a qualified practitioner, we suggest you contact one of the relevant organizations. In the UK you could contact the General Council and Register of Naturopaths (GCRN). The GCRNs keep a register of over 300 qualified practitioners of naturopathy. Website: www.naturopathy.org.uk. For other countries see their national governing body, easily found via the internet.
